High-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) is a relatively new cosmetic skin tightening method that some consider a non-invasive and painless alternative to facelift surgery.
HIFU uses focused ultrasound energy to reach the skin layers just below the surface. Ultrasound energy causes tissue to heat up quickly. As soon as the cells in the target area reach a certain temperature, they experience cell damage. Although this may seem counterintuitive, damage actually stimulates cells to produce more collagen, a protein that gives skin structure.
An increase in collagen makes the skin firmer, more elastic and less wrinkled. Because the high-frequency ultrasound beams are focused on a specific tissue location below the skin’s surface, the upper layers of the skin and adjacent tissues are not damaged.
HIFU is not recommended for people with infections and open skin lesions in the target area, severe or cystic acne, and metal implants in the treatment area.
How many HIFU sessions are needed?
Most clients only need one HIFU treatment. However, this may depend on the degree of skin color, biological response to ultrasound energy and individual collagen formation, some clients may benefit from these treatments. If several sessions are performed, they should be scheduled approximately 3-6 months apart.
